Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Medicine Woman Tarot Card Deck
by

I'm not normally a tarot kind of person but I've had this deck and guidebook for decades and consider it one of the most wonderful tools I've come across. There's simply not a bad card in the bunch nor an incorrect way to use them. The guidebook is worth reading front to back. What it teaches, and the advice it gives, consistently move you toward healing, wholeness, and growth. The suits are re-imagined from a more native viewpoint and offer both earthy grounding and high inspiration. I'm amazed that a single person was able to create something as beautiful in appearance and substance as this. It is a path of learning that just keeps spiraling upward.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers
by
Boo, Katherine

, January 01, 2013
An indelible look into the people society effectively throws away and the society they create as they struggle to find a way out. It is very difficult to write a nonfiction book that both captures the reader in riveting story and relates broader, overarching information at the same time. Boo has accomplished it. I feel I, and the world, owe her a thank you for bringing this story...these stories...and some of their causes into our awareness. The rich make decisions that affect people they never even know of. And probably 99% of us in this country ARE rich by Annawadi standards. I make very little money compared to other, middle-class Americans. Yet I know I am worlds richer than they. So what decisions do I make that might affect them and people like them?
