Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
by
Trevor Noah

The title of this book is in reference to the law under apartheid that made it illegal for people of different races to marry. Trevors' father was white and his mother was colored. He was literally born a crime. He describes growing up in South Africa in a most difficult period for a person of mixed race. Trevor writes with intelligence and humor. His description of the people's,the history and the politics of this area are most enlightening. What I liked most however was the central focus of the book, Trevor and his mother and the trials and tribulations they endured together. He is a son to be proud of.

A haunting and beautifully written story, set in the backdrop of a harsh cold environment.

Tower the Zoo & the Tortoise

I bought this at Powells' airport store. Our book club was tired of dark depressing stories. This looked like a fun read. When I started reading it I wasn't quite sure what to think. I was taken by suprise. Julia Stuart writes with great wit and an amazing sense of humor. The ending took me by suprise and brought a tear to my eye. I could see this book as a master piece theater production. If I get to visit England, the Tower of London will be a definite stop.
