Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. This book is a must have for the beginning writer. It covers the writing rules you must follow to be considered a professional with great examples and exercises. This is the reference book that you’ll mark up and keep with you for your editing. I’m glad I found it.

First Five Pages A Writers Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile

As a new writer I found this book feels like you're being hit over the head with a ruler. You can tell that the author really doesn't like new writers and this is a desperate attempt at educating them about fiction writing. He gives the impression that unless you’re a REAL artist you should just give it up. The examples are poor and the exercises are almost useless. I found myself just skimming the book after page 100. Everything he says about publishers and editors maybe true but it isn’t worth buying the book when you can go to a writers chat board on the web and get the better information for free.
