Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Home Of The Brave
by
Katherine Applegate, K A Applegate

My daughter will be teaching 'Home of the Brave' to her 4th and 5th grade class this year. She recommended this slim volume to me after she took a class on teaching this book. I love this book. If you know a child, this would make a great present. Katherine Applegate's prose is like reading a written tone poem. I have many favorite parts, but this is my most favorite: "You can have your dogs and cats, your gerbils and hamsters and sleek sparkling fish, But you will have lived just half a life if you never love a cow." You have to read the book to appreciate this lovely sentiment.

Stuff White People Like A Definitive Guide to the Unique Taste of Millions
by
Christian Lander

This is a very funny, fast read. At the end of the book, is a test you can take to see how white you are. I'm white (but I only scored 30% white), just not the right kind of white. If you like outdoor activities, expensive sandwiches, $800 strollers, study abroad, living near water, etc, you are the right kind of white.

Five Skies
by
Ron Carlson
kaahumanu
, July 11, 2008
The author, Ron Carlson, is the director of the graduate writing program at UC, Irvine in California. 'Five Skies' is an elegant look into the hearts of three damaged men. I am making this a selection for my book discussion group, I hope someone will explain the ending to me. 'Five Skies' will give us much to discuss.

Merles Door Lessons from a Freethinking Dog

I bought this book because I love the great cover. Ted Kerasate's writing matches the cover of the book. His writing is lyrical, he makes me want to move to Wyoming. I love this book and I love Merle.

Last Lecture
by
Randy Pausch, Jeffrey Zaslow
kaahumanu

I loved this book! Of course, I could go online and watch 'The Last Lecture', but I'm a person who prefers to read the book. If you liked 'Tuesday's With Morrie', you will love 'The Last Lecture'. They are very different books, but they both leave you, "hugging yourself with happiness" to misquote Michael Dirda. They are both very inspiring books. There is so much wisdom in this book to help you be a better person. I hope I can remember Randy's method for apology: "What I did was wrong. I feel badly that I hurt you. How can I make this better?". So simple, yet so difficult.

Longitudes and Attitudes: The World in the Age of Terrorism
by
Friedman, Thomas L.
kaahumanu
, May 01, 2008
If your book group is reading mostly fiction, you may want to select a book of non-fiction. I suggest, Pulitzer Prize winning author, Thomas L. Friedman's book 'Longitudes And Attitudes'. This book explains 9/11. You will find much to discuss in 'Longitudes And Attitudes'. It's a book you will refer to long after you have discussed it.

The Glass Castle: A Memoir
by
Jeannette Walls
kaahumanu
, April 14, 2008
Jeannette Walls and her brother and sisters lived an amazing life. Her parents were criminally neglectful, the children really raised themselves and each other. And yet, the children were loved and educated. 'The Glass Castle' explains a very strange willful type of homelessness. I'm going to recommend 'The Glass Castle' to my book club, there is much to discuss in this book.

Dreaming Water

Gail Tsukiyama

Several of my friends have recommended Gail Tsukiyama's wonderful books. 'Dreaming Water' is the first book I've read by this compelling writer. I love the way Ms. Tsukiyama alternates telling the story from the mother's to the daughter's to the friend's point of view. I look forward to reading her other books.

Saving The Queen A Blackford Oakes Novel
by
William F Jr Buckley

'Saving the Queen has passed the test of time. There is a wish fulfillment aspect that reminds me of John Grisham (your cover involves spending a lot of money). I miss William F. Buckley, Jr., at least we can still read his work.

Team of Rivals The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln
by
Doris Kearns Goodwin
kaahumanu
, February 20, 2008
'Team of Rivals' is my book club's selection for June. This is a book I probably never would have read had it not been a book club selection. I'm so glad I'm reading it, it's a brilliant book to read during an election year. It's amazing how little politics has changed. So much of what I'm reading is happening today. Doris Kearn Goodwin is a genius at explaining a very complicated subject.

I love the cover, it's what attracted me to the book. The cover is not corny at all, it's beautiful.

If you loved 'The Black Stallion' as a child, you will love 'The God of Animals'. On the surface, this book is a very adult, wonderful book about women and horses. There are so many other plots, the book is so well written. You will enjoy it on many levels. I loved 'The God of Animals'.

Not Quite What I Was Planning Six Word Memoirs by Writers Famous & Obscure

Could you write a six-word memoir? Could you write a six-word memoir for your Valentine? Try it. It's very thought provoking, and quite a challenge. I loved 'Not Quite What I Was Planning'.
