Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Quicken 98 for Windows for Dummies
by
Stephen L. Nelson

Save yourself the money and press F1 in Quicken instead. If you cannot find the answer in Quicken 98's quite extensive built-in help you certainly won't find it in this book. Nelson doesn't add anything helpful. To the contrary, he bounces past topics with "humorous" (barely) quips telling you not to bother with this, don't even think about doing that etc. This book is even less than helpful - it's annoying. If you want or need more insight or details than Intuit provides with the program you won't find it here. "Dummies" shouldn't be allowed to write books. This one is a waste of trees.

Beautiful Visit
by
Elizabeth Howard

This is a a classic in Christmas holiday reading with a great surprise... beginning! That's all I can say on that subject but don't spoil the beauty of this novel by reading ahead. The beginning of the novel will make perfect sense and leave you bewildered when you reach the end, making you want to go back and read it all over again. Could you call it a literary double-take? I would. It's a shame Ms. Howard's career took an abrupt about face after the release of this first novel. This is a great story about the awkwardness of a teenager's visit to the seldom seem relatives for a Christmas holiday that then spans decades from the late 1890's through WWII. After such a fantastic first effort Ms. Howard's next novels dealt with hairdressers, homosexuals, unsatisfactory relationships and everything else trite about the 1980's. Her career seems to be stuck in that time warp. One big let down after another compared to a classic such as "The Beautiful Visit."
