Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me & Other Concerns
by
Mindy Kaling

This book was pure fun, beginning to end. I read it in a day, and it made me feel like I was sitting at a bar listening to Mindy Kaling chatter, and constantly nodding my head to agree with her. I laughed out loud many times, but also related to so much of what she said, and I have a very different life than she does. Recommended for any woman in her twenties or thirties especially.

Anna & the French Kiss 02 Lola & the Boy Next Door
by

I loved this book completely, even more than her first book, Anna and the French Kiss. It's a great book about family, and love, and friendship, and growing up, and I can't wait to read it again. Also, if you love San Francisco, you should read this book, the city is like another person; the author gets it and the people so right. All of the characters feel like real people, especially both dads, who are both great and flawed, but mostly love each other and their kid. But Lola herself was a fantastic character, and I was so glad to let her into my life for a while, and sad to finish hanging out with her.

Betsy Was A Junior Betsy & Joe
by
Maud Hart Lovelace

I love all of the Betsy-Tacy books completely, but these two are probably my absolute favorites. It's really amazing how these books set 100 years ago could be set today, with just a few clothing changes. Betsy is a fun, fierce, loving heroine, who messes up and realizes it, gets crushes on boys and then a really big crush on the best boy, and has a fun and amazing family. The entire series is really wonderful, because all of the people feel like real people with real joys and sorrows (probably because the entire series is based on real people), and you get to live and grow up along with them.

Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot

I can't stop thinking about this book since I've read it, and I've bought it for three people, and recommended it to many more. It's about science, and medicine, and race, and class, and history, and people, and it's the only nonfiction book that I've ever read that I couldn't put down and stayed up until 1 am to finish. Completely absorbing, well written, and a fascinating story.

Vegetarian Cooking For Everyone
by
Deborah Madison
Jasmine

At this time of the year, when produce is so perfect, this book is a treasure for everyone, vegetarians and omnivores alike. It has great and easy to follow recipes for lots of different fruits and vegetables, and is very educational and instructive about cooking techniques in general.
