Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Goodbye Quilt
by

This is an incredible story of the relationship between a mother and her college bound daughter. They are driving cross country with all her daughter's favorite things in the vehicle to start her first year of college. As this is something I have done myself years in the past, it brought back so many memories. They find themselves contemplating a future without each other. It is full of fun and laughter, as well as sorrow. The story covers a mother's heartbreak at the loss of her child to adulthood, and the fear she hasn't prepared her well for the many pitfalls that she will face as an adult. A daughter's worry about making friends in her new environment, and praying her Mom will be fine without her. The mother works on a quilt in every spare moment to finish it so she can leave it with her daughter in her dorm room. The quilt is made with fabric pieces of dresses and costumes made for the daughter, as well as pieces of her father and mother's clothing of significance from years past. You just have to read about this unique relationship, and whether the quilt is ever finished. It is a book to reread and keep for years. I usually pass my favorite books on for others to read. This time, I bought several copies to share with my reading friends and family members! Enjoy!

James Beard Cookbook Revised Edition
by
James Beard

This was my very first cookbook. My girlfriend Dee gave it to me in 1972 in paperback form. James Beard goes into detail on every aspect of cooking. He educates the reader in a very entertaining way the basic fundimentals needed to become a good cook. I learned how to cook every type of vegetable, how to choose cuts of beef, pork, lamb, and just about any know edible animal in these pages. it is a good read and has basic delicious recipes for both the beginner and advanced cook. I purchased this for myself in hardback form in the early 1990's. I gave that copy to my daughter last year because she enjoys cooking for her husband, and while learning to cook through the years, knew this was the "Go To" book for answers to just about any cooking related question. Now I am having trouble finding this in hardcover form, but know I will find it eventually at Powells as I did in the 1990's in Tigard.
