Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. I remember Andrew McCarthy from the Pretty in Pink, Brat Pack days so this book comes as such a surprise. This memoir is a warm, mature, beautifully written rumination on love, intimacy and commitment. And it it a travelogue to boot! Fantastic.

Anthropologies: A Family Memoir
by
Beth Alvarado

A collection of moments, this memoir is written in the random way memory comes to us. Out of disparate moments Beth Alvarado, like a family photo album, puts the moments together to create a loving and heartbreaking portrait of a multi-generational, cross-cultural Southwestern family. In two back to back pages she made me laugh and cry. This is a quiet, deep, rich, wise book, full of love and beautiful, beautiful writing.

Boxer, Beetle

Hard to rate. Not really best book, but weird and strangely compelling. Kirkus reviews says "both funny and repellent."I can't tell you exactly what it was about but in it figure, Nazi memorabilia collecting, "a five-foot-tall, nine-toed, hard-drinking Jewish homosexual boxer", a eugenicist who loves him and some other stuff. Can't say I recommend it, but I did keep turning the page.
