Pinnochio Vampire Slayer

There have been a lot of paranormal crossovers lately, vampires and werewolves and zombies are invading classic literature by the hordes! But few stories feel so perfectly matched for a vampire invasion than that of Pinocchio. What other character in fiction has an endless supply of deadly stakes than the wooden boy whose nose grows every time he tells a lie? The author of this hilarious, dark gem of a graphic novel take the original story of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi (not that Disney stuff with the singing cricket " in the original story, he gets smashed in the first couple of paragraphs), and adds a vampire twist. In this volume, Pinocchio witnesses Geppetto’s death at the hands of a vampire and vows revenge. Together with a retired Blue Fairy, an old woodcutter and a cricket ghost, Pinocchio tries to convince the people of his town that they are in danger from the most nefarious of plots. Check out the sequel too!

This book really floored me. I am so impressed by the authors ability to bring the reader fully into the mind and heart of her protagonist. It's easier to empathize with a character when they are the victim of a kidnapping, but as Gemma slowly embraced what can only be described as Stockholm Syndrome, I found myself going along with her. By the end of the book, I found myself halfway routing for them to be together. Then I had to remind myself that this man, however handsome he may be, had been obsessed with her since age 10 and taken her away from all her loved ones. Throughout the book, Ty displays spells of psychosis, and though he is never cruel to Gemma (no rape or abuse), it may only be because she is cautious. The author introduces us to the beauty and the dangers of the Outback, and shows what transformations can occur when one's back is up against the wall. Highly recommended, but stay away if you don't like to be personally brought into a book, you might be disturbed by what you find.
