Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. 1Q84: 3 Volume Boxed Set
by
Haruki Murakami

This is one of the most rewarding books I have read. Long, but a page-turner, and despite the surreal circumstances, I have come to inhabit the world of 1Q84 and love its characters. Simply the most interesting recent novel I have read. Part detective story, part current events adventure, part science-fiction. Murakami has a gift for making our mundane world seem suddenly new and full of possibilities. If you are a fan of Douglas Adams, Umberto Eco, or both, you will love this book.

Lords of the North Saxon Chronicles 3
by
Bernard Cornwell

Cornwell is wonderfully interesting. He has placed a wholly believable fictional character into a real historical situation - the creation of the Danelaw in England in the late 9th century. The fighting is excellent, but the actual spelling of place names from the period, and the use of details in food, ceremonial performance, weapons, male-female relations, and the role of the Church in the period of Alfred the Great is wonderful. I recommend this book to any historical fiction fan.
