Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. A Visit from the Goon Squad

This novel is sneakily brilliant. It took a few chapters for me to get into this book, but when I did, I couldn't put it down. The seemingly separate stories end up painting a picture of intertwined lives, tragedies, and moments of triumph. No but really, people: there's a chapter in the form of a power-point presentation. And a wry vision of a future NYC that made me laugh and also cringe with recognition.

Prodigal Summer
by
Barbara Kingsolver

Need a sexy dose of summer? Prodigal Summer is the kind of book that makes you smell the honeysuckle and feel the humidity on your skin. This is a lush, sensual look into rural life and into the often unexpected ways people and wildlife are intricately interconnected. It's one of my favorites, particularly after spending my own summer in southern Appalachia.

Kindred
by
Octavia Butler

It's been a long time since I stayed up reading a novel under the covers, but "Kindred" kept me up at night, both with its page-turning plot and its searing portrayal of slavery's brutality. Butler uses the device of involuntary time-travel to explore love, race, and the legacy of slavery, making us confront the ways black and white Americans are both scarred and knit together by this legacy. "Kindred" is both deep and readable. I highly recommend it.

Fledgling
by
Octavia E Butler

Were you kind of intrigued by the sexy Twilight vampires, but turned off by the flat characters, anti-feminist messages, and bland writing? Read this instead. Your brain will thank you. You also get deep questions about race in America, the meaning of "family," and the relationship between love and sex. Plus it is a rip-roaring, page-turning, girl-on-the-run thriller. What's not to love?

Lilith's Brood
by
Octavia E. Butler
Elizabeth Bee
, January 19, 2012
Wow. If you love science fiction (or even if you don't), you should read this book. It's actually a trilogy, about a post-apocalyptic Earth on which the remnant of humanity is saved (or exploited?) by a race of genetic-engineering aliens. Is humanity inevitably doomed to destroy itself? Are we an inherently hierarchical people? What does it mean to be "human?" If you're intrigued by these questions, or you just would like, for once, to read something feminist AND entertaining, pick up "Lilith's Brood."

Simply Classic A New Collection of Recipes to Celebrate the Northwest
by
Seattle Jr League

, September 03, 2011
Growing up in Seattle, I enjoyed many dinners from this great collection of recipes. When I got my first apartment, my mom gave me a copy for Christmas, telling me "I've never made a bad recipe from this book." It's true. The book is beautiful, the recipes are easy to follow, and showcase the flavors of the region. If you love salmon and classy Northwest food, this book is a must.

Dark Is Rising Complete Sequence
by
Susan Cooper
Elizabeth Bee
, September 03, 2011
This is probably my all-time favorite series of books from my childhood. While not as whimsical as Harry Potter, the books are full of dramatic, epic conflicts between good and evil, echoes of King Arthur, magic swords, coming of age struggles, and atmospheric descriptions of Cornwall, Wales, and other parts of Great Britain. Buy it for your 9-14-year-old or for yourself.
