Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Focusing A Step By Step Technique That T

I started reading Focusing in the 1980's and carried it around with me for what felt like years, using it when I felt stuck or bad or confused. Now, in 2023 I have rediscovered it on my bookshelf. This is a deceptively simple exercise in self consciousness and self healing but it goes to the core of where our perceived problems lie. Which is in the body/mind not just the mind. It is simple once you 'get the feel' for it. This book carefully and clearly leads one through the process of finding the body feeling and connecting it to words, images and a surprising process of discovery and disentanglement. I highly recommend this book for anyone, actually. Those who think too much. Those who are overwhelmed by feelings. Those of us who feel like we are somehow missing the point.

Astrology for Yourself How to Understand & Interpret Your Own Birth Chart A Workbook for Personal Transformation

This is one of my favorite Astrology books!. It is set up as a workbook for understanding your own chart. It is a very good workbook. But what I love about it, as an Astrologer, are all the charts that are included that actually illustrate the complex relationships that, if you are trying to understand or memorize them a piece at a time, can feel cumbersome, and complicated. But these charts put together in one place many levels of complexity that can then be seen and understood easily. The charts are great reference material. They condense pages and pages of written words.

Shantaram

This is a stunning book with powerful, vivid writing that is,at times, poetry. It is both autobiographical and a search for the meaning of life. It has dialog that is rich, and character studies that are compelling and full of unexpected turns. It is about love and faith and betrayal. It is funny and terrible. It takes place in India and Gregory captures the paradoxes and the visceral reality of the place. I found myself rereading passages and remembering images long after I had finished reading the book.
