Renee Macalino Rutledge: Powell's Q&A: Renee Macalino Rutledge, author of 'One Hundred Percent Me' (0 comment)
Could you describe your latest book, One Hundred Percent Me?
A little girl is used to hearing questions about her looks all the time. "Where are you from?" "What are you?" These questions are a constant reminder from others that she is different. As she embraces her identity and culture, she teaches others that she belongs, that the differences they notice are part of what make her unique, special, and herself....

    Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh
    hoytstreet, December 01, 2016
Apparently books riddled with people who are creeps, liars, alcoholics, perverts and narcissists are my jam, because this book is packed with them. I think it's because Moshfegh was able to write them with startling realism. You know these people. You know this town. You know how this story happened. I loved it all.

Grisha Trilogy 01 Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo
    hoytstreet, September 02, 2012
This is what you want from a YA novel. It doesn't pander. It has less than perfect characters. (Not the typical "less than perfect but everyone else thinks they are perfect anyways" type- I am looking at you Bella Swan.) And a plot that keeps you turning pages. A unique spin on an age old tale of light versus dark. Full of rich details that can put you in the different grand palaces and on the barren plains of the Unsea. It didn't leave you with an extreme cliffhanger but instead just a desire to see what happens next for the characters and the world in which they live. Pick it up! It will take you a day to read it. Sure you are going to ignore your house work, skip meetings, or forget to take the dog for a walk. So plan ahead. You deserve a dark, fun, and whimsical break.

Johannes Cabal the Necromancer Johannes Cabal Book 1 by Jonathan L Howard
    hoytstreet, September 26, 2011
Borderline sociopath, Johannes Cabal, bashes his way through the English countryside trying to collect souls. A perfect Faustian tale that will lead you through a carnival of hilarity and darkness. Moving, morbid and clever, Johannes Cabal the Necromancer will not disappoint you and leave you breathless.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
    hoytstreet, August 31, 2011
This was a perfect novel. I have never read anything where I could feel the love (mainly between Oskar and his grandmother) radiating from the pages. It was that pure and sweet. The quirky voice of Oskar dictating his thoughts as he tries to navigate his world, will stick with me forever. Perfect.

Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock
    hoytstreet, August 15, 2011
Gruesome, haunting, and absolutely incapable of being put down. I thought for sure that this was going to be too intense to read and then, without noticing, I was more than halfway through. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it, which leads me to believe that The Devil All the Time is going to be an important piece of American literature.

One for the Money: Stephanie Plum 1 by Janet Evanovich
    hoytstreet, September 02, 2010
I want to rate this both a "1" and a "5". -Reality TV -Maple Bars with Bacon -Books about Vampires -Circus Peanuts -Justin Bieber -Stephanie Plum Series All things we know we shouldn't enjoy, after all we are adults of moderate intelligence and yet we can stop ourselves. It is like crack, worse than that, it is Jersey Shore crack. The characters are predictable, the plot is transparent and I literally bought the "Two For The Dough" before I had closed the first book. I can't explain it in any rational terms. These books are a guilty pleasure. People say you can read them out of order but I say you have to start with "One For The Money". Do yourself a favor, buy the book, laugh out loud, get caught up and become an addict. All the cool kids are doing it.
