Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Bloodlines 02 Golden Lily

A lot of reviewers on other sites were very displeased with this book, but I thought it was a really fun read. When the Vampire Academy series wrapped up I felt that it was a nice end to the story of the main characters. Bloodlines lets us continue on with some of the supporting characters that we fell in love with. The story was very transparent. I knew where she was going with the plot from very early on, but I still enjoyed watching it unfold. My greatest gripe about the book is that Sydney was very slow for such a smart person. It can be argued that some very smart people are blind to social cues. It is a small gripe, but it felt forced. Overall it was a fun, fast read. I love the world, and thought that this story was a good addition. The characters are all very easy to love and empathize with. It does leave you wanting more. Be forewarned!

Vampire Academy 06 Last Sacrifice
by
Richelle Mead

I am usually disappointed with the last book in a series. Authors tend to give you a sence that the characters will have many more adventures, and you are going to miss out, or they leave you with too many loose ends, too many questions. I was extremely pleased with Richellle Mead, and the end of The Vampire Academy series. She did not try to cram everything into a happy ending box and tie it up with an ill fitting bow. What she did provide is an excellent end to the series, answers to all my questions, enough plot that you feel the characters will live on, but she ended it in a way that I am ok with a beloved serie ending. I have thoroughly enjoyed the entire series, and recommend it to all my friends looking for a young adult fantasy series that is good all the way till the end.

Jack of Kinrowan: Jack the Giant-Killer and Drink Down the Moon
by
Charles De Lint

Charles DeLint converted me from a strict Non-fiction diet, to a diet of fiction that is filled with fey, ogres, and the occasional pixy. He paints worlds so rich with life and colors that you cannot help but go along for the ride. This is one of my all time favorites that I recently pulled out for the billionth re-read. Jack of Kinrowan is a wonderful telling of jack and the bean stalk for a new generation. Delint has a wonderful way of bringing magic into the ordinary, and I fell in love with Jack from the start. She is such a mess that I just had to love her. I cannot say enough good things about this book! If you are at all interested in urban fantasy then you should give this book a try.

A Game of Thrones: Song of Ice and Fire 1

George R R Martin

A Game of Thrones is a complex story full of rich and wonderful characters. Intrigue abound in this book, and I did not want to put it down. I really enjoyed how my perception of the characters continually changed and morphed. There really is no black and white in this book only moving shades of grey.

Hobs Bargain
by
Patricia Briggs

, August 10, 2010
This has become one of my favorite books. It has everything an epic fantasy should have: magic, ignorance, love, hate, fey, old gods, and a world in peril. Patricia Briggs does an excellent job of giving her protagonist a voice that is strong, yet relatable. The Hob's Bargain is on the top of my "comfort food reading list".
