Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Cheese Companion A Connoisseurs Guide
by

I make cheese as a hobby and borrowed this book from my local library to review it for a website and cheese forum I run called CheeseForum org. The Cheese Companion is a small 1 in/2 cm thick hardcover reference type book published in 1999 with 224 glossy color pages. 20% of the pages are sections on intro/history/how made/classifying sections and 80% is the cheese directory with 1-2 pages and pictures of just over 100 different cheeses with a few cooking recipes snuck in. I find Juliet Harbutt’s books more detailed and encompassing.

I make cheese as a hobby and borrowed this children's book from my local library to review it for a website and forum I run called CheeseForum org. From Farm To You, Cheese is a medium sized 1/4 in/0.5 cm thick hardcover children's book published in 2003 with 32 color picture filled pages. It's contents are i) an intro, ii) history, iii) different kinds, iv) how made, v) cheese factories, vi) cheese around world, vii) make cottage cheese, viii) glossary & ix) index. This is a fun introduction to cheese type book for a 8-11 year old daughter/son or grandson/granddaughter who may be interested in your love of cheese and possible career or hobby.

Blessed Are the Cheesemakers (From Monty Python's Life of Brian) I make cheese, run a website and forum at www.CheeseForum.org, and got this book to broaden my knowledge of different American made Cheeses. "The New American Cheese" is a medium sized 1 in/2 cm thick format hardcover reference book with glossy color pages with many pictures. It’s contents is i) the normal intro to cheese, buying storing, pairing with wine etc and appendices, 40%, ii) a listing and summary of American Cheese Makers with logo’s, no pictures, 20%, and iii) cooking recipes with pictures, 40%. If you are interested in artisan American Cheese Makers this is a great book. Turophile (Lover of Cheese)

Murrays Cheese Handbook A Guide to More Than 300 of the Worlds Best Cheeses

I make cheese, run a website and forum at www.CheeseForum.org, and got this book to broaden my knowledge of different cheeses. "The Murray’s Cheese Handbook" is a long thin ½ in/1 cm thick format good for putting in a pocket. It was written by the current owner of the famous Murray’s Cheese Store in New York City, USA. It has the normal intro and FAQ and pairing with wine sections but the bulk of the book is a listing and summary of 300+ of the author’s favorite US and international cheeses, roughly ½ a page per cheese, no pictures. Nice quality paper, binding and cover that would stand up to many trips in pocket while visiting cheese stores. But, if you want more details and pictures there are better albeit bigger encyclopedia type books out there.

Artisanal Cooking A Chef Shares His Passion for Handcrafting Great Meals at Home

I make cheese, run a website and forum at www.CheeseForum.org, and borrowed this book from a library to broaden my knowledge of different cheeses. "Artisanal Cooking" does this to a small extent as only 12 pages on cheese intro, buying, handling, storing, serving etc and a listing and description of the authors’ favorite American Artisan made cheeses. However, to its credit, it is a beautifully laid out book recipe book, albeit not a lot on cheese!

Making Artisan Cheese Fifty Fine Cheeses That You Can Make in Your Own Kitchen
by

I make cheese and run a website and forum called www.CheeseForum.org. I bought this as my second cheese making book after Ricki Carroll's "Home Cheese Making" from which I have made several successful and several unsuccessful cheeses (records, pictures and recommendations posted in forum). In summary, "Making Artisan Cheese" is a very good onboarding to cheese and cheese making with 39 recipes and a few variations (I didn't count advertised 50). Many of which are not in Ricki's book. No idea how accurate the recipes are, will have to try, but in general, good news, they have more detail than Ricki's book. The details and color pictures are nice, albeit sometimes sparse on the pages (lots of white space). This would also make a great coffee table type book or for show at a cheese tasting party.
