Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

There's a lot of debate surrounding this book, and why some people hate it. So it's like this: If you read the books for Stephanie and all the antics and shenanigans she gets into, you'll hate this book. Stephanie is complacent, bored, and aggravating. If you read the books for Ranger, you'll hate this book. Ranger is almost nonexistent. If you read the books for the mystery, you'll hate this book. There's no mystery, no danger, no adventure. Nothing of the sort. If you love the books because you love to read, you'll hate this book. This book is words on a page--not a story. There's no emotion, no reader/writer connection. There's absolutely no incentive to get to the end...except for the part where it's finally over. But if you enjoy books where women are put in their places, given a list of chores to do while THE MAN is away, referred to as sluts, and berated for not having gotten pregnant and therefore obligated to marry already, then holy cow, this is the book for you! This book is a woman's worst nightmare come to life. I hated what Janet did to Stephanie in this book by turning her into a timid, co-dependent hole on a mattress. Stephanie has no passion, no fire, no emotion whatsoever. She's an empty shell of what she used to be. And considering Janet prides herself on writing stories that "empower" women, this book is a misogynistic slap in the face, not just to me, but to women everywhere.

If I didn’t know better I would think this is some kind of sick joke. For a book promoted as a funny romantic mystery it’s lacking all of the above. Where’s the mystery? Why is Stephanie acting like a spoiled three year old? Why is Lula acting like Joyce? Why is Joe acting weird? Where the heck is Ranger? This book is more boring than a snail race, and takes twice as long to read. To be fair, though, there's enough repetition and redundancy and repetition in this one to make for a worthwhile drinking game. But if you go that route, choose something with a low proof or you could end up with alcohol poisoning by chapter six. Dood. If this is the best Janet Evanovich can do after fourteen years maybe it’s time she retired. This book is boring, rehashed, and completely unreadable.
