Fearless Fourteen

Janet Evanovich

As an avid reader and probably one of Janet Evanovich's most dedicated and loyal fans, for the first time in my avid reader life, I posted a review. A review of Janet's fourteenth installment in the World of Plum. I have loved everything Plum for years. My review was prompted because I was so saddened and appalled at what Janet has done to my beloved characters. I read Plum for everyone in the book. Granted, Valerie and Kloughn were annoying and I can do without them, but I could not be silent and not voice my feelings on what I viewed as the assassination of the characters of those I have loved for all these years. My review was prompted by my not hearing Janet's voice in this book. She has turned rich characters into jokes. Slapstick. Gone are the scary bad guys. Where are the kind of characters like the Benito Ramirez, Abruzzi, Bart Cone's that made my heart pound? I am appalled at what she has done to Morelli. The Morelli in Fearless Fourteen is NOT the Morelli we met in One For The Money. Not the character that we have grown to know in the other books. Janet has degraded him to a shallow, sleezy joke. The good guy who got past the Morelli men curse? In Fearless Fourtee, not a guy I would want nor want for a daughter. There is no anger here because this is a "Morelli" book and not a "Ranger" book. THIS is NOT a Morelli book. A Morelli book would give us a Morelli to really love. The Morelli in this book is a joke. She has done the same to my beloved Lula. A shallow Lula, resorting to cheap tricks. Not "my" Lula. I grew to love and respect Lula. As I read, I could not help thinking, "oh, Lula, what has she done to you?" I am not buying this book because this is not the writing of an author that I have loved, writing characters that I love. To me, this is slapstick, plain and simple. Not the powerful books that kept me riveted from page one to the last page of every book. Books that took me through the full range of emotions, laughed until I doubled over, heart pounding fear from real villains, rich and emotion-moving side characters. I want my old world of Plum back. I want Janet's voice back. The voice I first heard in One For the Money.

Fearless Fourteen

Janet Evanovich

I am so depressed. Janet has lost her “voice”. As an avid reader of many authors, I was as close to Janet Evanovich’s biggest fan as one could get. It all started when I opened a book titled One for the Money. The literary world's introduction into Stephanie Plum and her world of family, friends, FTA's, neighbors, trials and tribulations, scary criminals, bad car Karma, and so on. As I sit here, my mind races back over the books. My mind reels with memories of each book. Memories of laughing so hard I was doubled over with tears in my eyes. Racing through the book non-stop from page one to the last page. Sadness when I read the last line on the last page that I had to wait a whole year for the next book. Each book got even better. I was at the bookstore on the day of each new release, bought the book and raced home to read. I could not wait to enter the world of Plum. To revisit those characters that I had become emotionally involved with. Grew to love. My mind is spinning. So many scenes and plots that I loved are running rampant. The richness of Janet’s voice as I was introduced in each new book, to really scary bad guys, amazing side characters, fantastic plots, the best laugh-out-loud moments. All of this packed into twelve fantastic books. Twelve books written in Janet’s amazing voice. Tight, edgy, funny, scary. She could say it all in a three word sentence. Yes, indeed, this series had taken me for a wonderful ride. Then last year, Lean Mean Thirteen was released. Okay, forgiveness. Everyone is entitled to one very off book. Fearless Fourteen....anger. What has she done to those I loved? She has insulted and humiliated Stephanie, Morelli, Lula, Grandma, Tank......who ARE these characters in this book???? Where is the “mystery”? Janet, what have you done to the beloved characters in the World of Plum? What have you done to Morelli? As I am not supposed to give away much of the plot, you’ve taken him from the lovable best detective in Trenton to a person more proud of his sleezy past sexual exploits than anything else. Slapstick. What have you done to Lula? You’ve taken that former ’ho, from hanging beat up and bleeding on Stephanie’s fire escape to a manipulative, cheap trick idiot. A character that I grew to love and respect. What have you done to her? I don’t believe that the Lula you have given me in Twelve books would have done this. Tank? You can’t do this to Tank. You turned him into a “simple wuss.” Grandma Mazur? Oh, yes, always over the top. But, come on, hunkered in the Plum living room, dressed in Goth, playing computer war games with her old lady cronies? Mrs. Plum, downing a glass of whiskey? No, not the Mrs. Plum I knew from twelve books. Ranger - It’s sad to watch Stephanie keep using him. And last, but not least, what have you done to “my” Stephanie? Where is her edge? Her “Burg” attitude. I miss her. I know, I know, I am venting. Venting because I have lost something wonderful. The world of Plum that Janet Evanovich gave me in twelve wonderful books. Now she is passing off slapstick, sloppy meandering writing, loose plots, embarrassing characters as her next foray into the World of Plum. Many great TV shows ended while they were “on top”. Janet should have ended this series with Twelve Sharp. Gone out on top. I must apologize for this long review. However, this reader is angry and grieving. Angry that Janet Evanovich has lost her voice. Fearless Fourteen is NOT the voice of Janet Evanovich that I devoured and loved in twelve books. This is slapstick. I am embarrassed for what she has done to my beloved characters. Oh, Janet, what have you done to my world of Plum?
