Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Tosefta 2 Volumes
by
Jacob Neusner
KID613
, September 01, 2011
If you have read Professor Jacob Neusner's one volume "The Mishnah: A New Translation" or any of the volumes of his translation of the Babylonian and Jerusalem Talmuds, you will appreciate the new two volume "The Tosefta". Dr. Neusner is the first scholar to translate all the tractates of the Tosefta into English. The rabbis of the Talmud frequently refer to the Tosefta in interpreting the Mishnah. I've found that Rabbi Neusner's new edition of the Tosefta is a great companion to the Mishnah.

The best and most comprehensive dictionary of the Aramaic and Hebrew terms used in the two Talmuds {Bavli & Yerushalmi} , Targums & Midrashic literature is Dr. Marcus Jastrow's two volume work, now available in one volume. No wonder that thousands of students of classic rabbinic literature keep a copy on their reference shelf.

River The Kettle & The Bird A Torah Guide To S
by
Aharon Felsman
KID613
, September 05, 2010
The title ["The River, the Kettlem & the Bird: A Torah Guide to a Successful Marriage"] may be odd, but the advice is clear and cogent. With decades of teaching, preaching, and counseling experience behind him and a crispt writting style, Rabbi Aharon Feldman ["Felsman" is a Powell typo], the dean of Baltimore's Ner Israel Rabbinical Seminary, has produced a must read for engaged and newly married couples.

Blessing Of A Broken Heart
by
Sherri Mandell
KID613
, September 05, 2010
Although Sherri Mandell's 12 year old son was murdered by terrorists, she did not let that horror turn her into a bitter woman. "The Blessing of a Broken Heart" is the moving story of her grief and growth as a mother and activist for harmonious social relations. It is not easy to see the good in tragic events. This book and the Kobi Mandell Foundation are some of the postive results of the murder.

Torah A Modern Commentary English Open
by
W Gunther Plaut
KID613
, August 22, 2010
A number of years ago the leaders of Reform Judaism decided that they should produce their own one volume translation and commentary to the Pentateuch as an alternative to the older but still popular Hertz edition. The result is the "Torah: A Modern Commentary". It was edited by a distinguished Toronto pulpit rabbi, Dr. W. Gunther Plaut.

In my opinion, "The New Oxford Annnotated Bible with the Apocrypha, Augmented Third Edition, New Revised Standard Version" is such a fine scholarly but readable volume that it should be on the reference bookshelf of every student and teacher of the Bible, regardless of religion or sect.
