Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics

Wow! This is the best book I have read in a long time. And I read a lot. Daniel Brown has told a story of boys coming from diverse backgrounds coming together to win the 1936 Olympics. What truly amazed me is the amount of detail provided regarding the boys background, as well as historical background. And yet it is never overwhelming. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Little Princes
by
Conor Grennan

This is easily the best nonfiction book I have read for a very long time. The author undergoes a life changing experience volunteering to work at an orphanage in Nepal. His initial plan is to volunteer for 3 months as a resume enhancer, then spend 9 months travelling the world. He does his volunteer work, but is so touched by the children that after his travels he returns to Nepal. Finding that many of the children are not orphans at all, he establishes a foundation to work toward reuniting the families. Mr. Grennan is very honest about his mistakes and shortcomings, and quick to give others credit for their ideas and contributions. That honesty is very touching. You will not be able to help comparing this book to Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, but Little Princes is far better.

This new novel by Chris Cleave concerns Olympic cycling and is a very timely look at a grueling sport. Mr. Cleave presents us with a fascinating look at the stamina and perserverance required to compete at this level. He also creates believable characters, and gives them personal lives that are worthy of medals in themselves. If you loved Little Bee, you must read Gold.
