Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I read this book in a day. If you like mystery with a dash of angst and romance, you'll like this book, too. It's not a mainstream bestseller by any means, but if you are looking for a good story that keeps your attention about a believable LGBT protagonist with issues to which LGBT members can relate, you'll enjoy this book. I definitely recommend it. Was in Portland this past weekend and picked it at random while browsing Powell's LGBT section and was not disappointed.

This is the best book from this series in a while. It gripped me and kept my attention. I enjoyed it until the end. I do think that Cornwell's books have changed through the years. The hardest part for me has been the decline of Marino and Lucy. Scarpetta's and Wesley's relationship is much more centered in this book, which is nice. Personally, I think that when Marino attacked Scarpetta, whether it was his fault or not, he lost a lot of credibility with the readers. To have him still as a recurring character in the books is difficult because I give no credence to what he says. I think Lucy's credibility has been attacked one too many times, too. However, even with these characters playing a central role in the book, it is well written, forensically exciting and technologically exciting. Would love to see Scarpetta continue with a new detective as I can't read about Marino anymore. Just my opinion. Some other readers may like him. This book also opens the door to some events of Kay's past and it would be nice to see a book where some of these things are tied up and resolved so she can at least get some closure. I like the new examiner mentioned in the book. The one Marino kind of digs. It would be cool to see her take a more prominent role and Marino ride off into the sunset. Also, I feel Lucy reads better when in a relationship, no matter how complex.
