Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Red Mist Scarpetta 19
by
Patricia Cornwell

As always Scarpetta is a facinating and complex character. She prays that the ratty old van will get her where she's going and while she describes the countryside and the difficulty of traveling it, she is at the same time giving you insights into the characters of Kathleen Lawler and Lola Daggette. You may find getting to the "meat" of the story a little drawn out - but believe me, it is worth the read. One of her best, right up there with "The Body Farm" and "Black Notice".

Black Hills
by
Nora Roberts

Black Hills is one of Nora Roberts' best. Her characters come to life and get you involved in their story - Coop, the reluctant city boy, is sent to his grandparents home in South Dakota, no cable tv, no video games - for an 11 year old boy - a total bummer! Then he meets Lil, and though she is a girl (what decent, peer influenced 11 year old boy likes girs??) her home made batting cage and ability to throw and hit the ball are quite a surprise for Coop. We are taken from the dreams of adolescence to the older teen-age years and young love, separation and heartbreak, yet there is one shared experience that will forever haunt them: the terrifying discovery of a hiker's body. 12 years later Coop and Lil are reunited - with a career behind him as a cop and then a PI - Coop is back in The Black Hills - where he re-discovers his love for Lil and the knowledge that she has acheived her dream of opening a wildlife refuge. Suddenly small pranks and acts of destruction escalate into the heartless killing of a cougar, recollections of an unsolved murder in these very hills have Coop springing to action to keep Lil safe. As Coop struggles to keep Lil safe and in the midst of rekindled love - they must fight to find the twisted killer that has chosen Lil as his ultimate target. Roberts is a skilled and talented story teller and you get inside the lives of Lil and Coop as the story unfolds - a definite "Must Read".

Great story of a woman coming to know her strengths. Totally reshaping the lives of herself and her children - and solving an old family mystery! Good reading and entertaining - makes you reflect on your own life and the problems that you encounter along the way.
