Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Reach
by
Nate Kenyon

Every now and then, a book comes along that sets itself apart. Of the thousands I've read over my lifetime, very few have been of the sort that I would read more than once. Since its release, I have read The Reach four times. It is a masterful work by a superb storyteller, as chilling as it is irresistible. Nate Kenyon plys his trade with skill only found in authors that have released a lot more books than him. The style reminds you a bit of a young Stephan King, but with a flair and grace all of his own. It kept me thinking long after I had finished it, and each read through uncovers even more things to love about it. For horror fans, or people that just like books, I highly recommend The Reach.

Oh My Goddess 01
by
Kosuke Fujishima

So begins the series that got me seriously interested in Manga/Anime. From the opening page, the reader is immediately drawn into the tale of Keichi and Belldandy. This Manga will make you laugh - and reach for the next one. The characters or brilliantly designed, and Fujishima always keeps them true to themselves. The main thing to notice is how complex each of the personalities are. Bottom line: Sometimes getting what you wish for is exactly what you need.

Twilight: Twilight 1
by
Stephenie Meyer

Stephanie Meyer is the best new author I have read. She is also the best author I have read. I am a reader, and I have read over 1000 books, so I don't give that compliment lightly. Thanks to her, I was inspired to pick up the pen again, after a long bout of depression. Her tales have gotten some of my non-reader friends into reading books. Somehow, once you start, you can't put the book down. Her words pull you along until you are hopelessly lost in it. When the final page turns, you are thirsty for more. She leaves you waiting for her next work when, after only five days, you have read all she has published. If anyone is hesitant about picking this book up, don't. It may be marketed at young adult romance, but it truly universal, in a way Harry Potter could never be. If anyone is hesitant because they don't want anything to be better than J.K. Rowling, I say open your eyes to a world that is better developed, and better written than Rowling's world of boy wizards. I have never met a single person who, after reading Twilight, said they didn't like it. If it were possible, I would give these books six stars, as they are above and beyond anything else.
