A must read for history lovers. The ten years of research done by Elizabeth Kostova is obvious is in every chapter of the book. The warmth and love she put into this masterpiece will leave you wondering how anyone could be so brilliant. The story begins to be told by a 16 year old girl and gradually brings in the other people that looked mythology in the face. If your not a history lover yet this book might very well be the one that will leave you hooked. Briliant book. It's Dracula by Bram Stoker; endulged in class, eloquence and caffeine. Read it before the movie comes out this later this year. you wont regret it. read it and check out her new novel The Swan Thieves signed copy from Powell's available Jan. 27.

The Catcher in the Rye
by
J. D. Salinger
Jose Juarez
, January 09, 2010
How can anyone dislike this original work? Although it may seem primitive and dull now it was a breakthrough in its time and definitely worth reading now if your a true literature lover. What almost killed it for me was that it is forced on high school students when in reality, The Catcher in the Rye, has merit to stand on its own.

Kurt Vonnegut is brilliant with his dark comedy in Slaughterhouse-Five. It's his best work that I've read to date. Worth the time.

Starting Over Why the Last Decade Was So Damn Rotten & Why the Next One Will Surely Be Better
by
Andy Serwer

Andy Serwer is problably the first Republican I have even begun to respect. He is truly objective when it comes to reporting despite the fact that he is right wing, amazing! huh? But it's true I read his article in Time Magazine and was hooked, it was basically a preview on this book. Read his article at time.com and you'll understand why it's so important that you preorder his book or buy it when it when it comes out. Left wing or right wing you'll enjoy this book.

Harvest
by
Tess Gerritsen
Jose Juarez
, June 01, 2009
Harvest or rather Tess Geritsen is one of those writers that you can't believe that you have never heard of. Despite the fact that Tess Geritsen is a bestselling author I had never heard of her before a co-worker of mine recommended The Surgeon. After reading The Surgeon I was hooked, Tess Gerritsen delivers everytime. In Harvest (her debut thriller novel) she writes with such great flow and captivation that the story reads itself, you won't be able to set it down. Harvest is great in creating characters and bringing them together. If you're anything like me who naively discriminated against crime novels or thrillers novels this is the book that will change your mind.

Knockemstiff
by
Donald Ray Pollock
Jose Juarez
, May 21, 2009
You don't need to be from Ohio (I'm not) or even know anything about Ohio (except that they pretty much handed the presidency to Dubya twice!) Great stories are great stories no matter what they are about or where they come from and that's what Donal Ray Pollock accomplish with his debut story collection Knockemstiff: a compilation of universally understood stories that are filled with dysfunction, intimate horror, awkardness, sadness and hope. All in one but unique from other books that promise the same. If you hated Dead Boys by Richard Lange (like I did) or didn't; You'll appriciate Knockemstiff for it's artistic value.

Nobody Move
by
Denis Johnson
Jose Juarez
, May 15, 2009
Dull. Hard to follow. One dimensional. If that's your type of novel than Nobody Move is right for you. I don't like crime novel's but I thought I would give this one a shot since it was suppose to be set in my hometown of Bakersfield, California but mainly the plot revolves around mentioning the city of Bakersfield and a bunch of other fictional city names. Blah. Denis Johnson seems a little cocky in his latest novel; writing as if whatever he writes is intant gold. 'But don't take my word for it.' Read it yourself. *I recommend The Devil's of Bakerfield by John Shannon.

When the Darkness Falls
by
J. F. F. Gonzalez
Jose Juarez
, May 08, 2009
When Darkness Falls is a good read if your still trying to decide what novel to read next. The story collection is awkward, captivating and surpringly rich with suspence. Specially the story Riding the Storm Out, it keeps you wanting more. The story Sending Them Home has a good concept with mediocre delivery. Overall a good buy.

Dead Boys Stories
by
Richard Lange
Jose Juarez
, May 07, 2009
I just don't get it. Dead Boys received high praise from just about every critic but it turned out to be a lame compilation of stories. Think about a time when you caught yourself flipping the channels, bored, with nothing to do. Now picture nothing but Nicholas Cage movies playing on every channel and you'll get a feel of what reading Dead Boys is like. Monotone, boring, depressing. The stories are like fragments of a bigger picture but the bigger picture never really forms. Dead Boys would have been better off being a Photography Book it would have said just as much with much less effort on the readers part.

Bad Monkeys
by
Matt Ruff
Jose Juarez
, May 01, 2009
Ever heard of Matt Ruff? Me neither. I took a chance on Ruff's latest novel Bad Monkeys and it paid off. Bad Monkeys is fiction writing at its best! It's reminicent of The Terminator but genuinely original and independent. The story engages you from the get go. Take a chance, the only thing you'll regret is not reading Bad Monkeys any sooner. If you can, purchase the book NEW, independent writers need recognition too. Ruff has been succesful at creating cult followings for all his four books but has yet to receive the appreciation that comes from a best selling novel.

Lie
by
Kultgen, Chad

Chad has done it again! Describing The Lie as Cruel Intentions (movie) times one thousand times better does little justice to the originality that is The Lie. Incredible prose writing! If you can, buy the book NEW so that such a genius writer gets recognized! Seriously it's a must read! It's hilarious, sad and true. You can read an excerpt through the harper perrinial web-site, the first 70 pages are available. You'll get sucked in.

Fidel: A Critical Portrait is what Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana (by Michael Azzerad) is to Kurt Cobain and Nirvana. The most in-dept account of one history's most controvercial political figures as told by him. Tad Szulc did his best to write an objective bio.

By far it is the best Huey Long bio. It offers alot of more detail about Huey's life growing up and his life as a politician. It does a good job at staying un-bias and provides the best objective portrait you've probably ever read about Huey P. Long.

Come As You Are The Story Of Nirvana
by

Incredible bio! Kurt Cobain actually sought out Michael Azzerad for this bio. It tells the story of not only Kurt Cobain but also the Dave Grohl and Krist Novaselic as well as all their previous drummers! It is a must read. I gurantee that you'll read more than once. It is AMAZING! By the time you finish reading you'll understand who kurt cobain was and what he really represented. You'll understand Cobain's relationship with his fellow member and you'll be able to understand how Courtney love ruined it all. Kurt Cobain would still be here.

A MUST READ! It will keep you laughing and make you an instant Bukowski fan. Bukowski's writing is original and one of a kind, it's simple writing full of content. Bukowski is the best in our generation! I gurantee that if you have never read Bukowski you won't be able to get enough after reading his first novel Post Office: It's an insight into a regular man's life. It's sarcastic, funny, and strong. R.I.P. Charles Bukowski 1920-1994

Devils of Bakersfield A Jack Liffey Mystery
by
John Shannon
Jose Juarez
, November 20, 2008
I originally bought the book because I have lived in Bakersfield for two years and I wanted to see how a writer could fictionalize this third world city. Turns out the story is really good. The story keeps you captivated, Detectective Jack is in search for his daughter Maeve and along the way learns a little history about Bakersfied, California. As you read along you learn a couple of things about this dysfunctual melting pot that we call Bakersfield. Bakersfield needs your Democratic Vote! Help!
