Constellation of Vital Phenomena
by
Anthony Marra
Kathryn Weiss
, October 22, 2014
In his first novel, Anthony Marra writes about a Chechnyan village whose daily life is reminiscent of the horrors of a Bosch painting. Marra's unforgettable characters include an incompetent village doctor and a Russian informer. The reader is vested in all of the characters' fates and feels empathy for them even when they commit atrocious deeds. Amid all of the novel's despair and horrors, there is surreal humor. Hope lies in the title, which is taken from the definition of life taken from an old medical textbook.

Major Pettigrews Last Stand
by
Helen Simonson
Kathryn Weiss
, January 19, 2012
This book is as much fun as watching a PBS classic drama. Major Pettigrew is an unforgettable character. He's a man out of tune with modern day morality but he refuses to go gently into the night. Filled with humor and sharp observation,it's a great read.
