Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Death at La Fenice

A fun and wonderful mystery set in Venice! This is the first of many mysteries by Donna Leon set in Venice and featuring her detective, Commissario Guido Brunetti, and it is as much fun to read now as when it was first published in 1992. Here, Brunetti investigates the poisoning of famous maestro Helmut Wellauer, which has occurred backstage at Venice's famous opera house, La Fenice. Universally disliked as a person but one of the great musicians of his time, Wellauer could have been the victim of any number of people: opera singers, directors, a woman he had had an affair with 50 years earlier who now lives in poverty while he is celebrated and wealthy...so many motivations. It is nice to get to know the Commissario as he searches for the murderer.
