Beautiful language. “Babel” develops slowly plot wise. That said, I was so impressed by the writing that I immediately bought “The Poppy War” by RF Kuang I hope readers who enjoy stories about scholars and historical fiction, will find this book

This book was a wicked gift from my sister. I say wicked because it grabbed me and now I am in the middle of the series reading a book a month and thus about 3000 pages over the past 4 months. I did not expect to enjoy this book since I don't care for romance, history or fantasy much. Yet it opened a doorway to "What IF?". What if a modern woman was sucked into history 200 years past... The literary flow has a strong current. The author has a decent vocabulary to pull from. As for the story, the historical questions pop out... is there truth to this "historical fact" or was it made up for the story only? The romance serves as a framework for the motivation behind the actions and it asks the question about the meaning of love. Two points dropped the rating from a 5 to a 4 in my thinking. First, the sex scenes were somewhat excessive. Secondly, I would NOT recommend this book to my husband, sons or male friends. Therefore, its audience is not universal. Yet I imagine many readers want to visit Scotland and read up on highland history after reading this book. Thus it is worth more than mere entertainment.
