Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I knew essentially nothing about James Garfield before I read this book, except that he was assassinated. But what a wealth of biography and current events is provided in this relatively short book! Not only did I learn about Garfield, but also Charles Guiteau (the man who shot him), Alexander Graham Bell, Joseph Lister, Roscoe Conkling, James G. Blaine, Chester A. Arthur.... The writing is lively and there's never a lapse into pedantry. I love getting my history lessons this way!

Book That Made Your World How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization

This book is an engaging reminder of how much we owe to the influence of Christianity, not only on Western culture but on human progress as a whole. In an age where it's accepted dogma that Christianity is backwards and repressive, how refreshing to read that it's played quite the opposite role -- and to have the apologist hail from India at that!

A terrific story about the competition among sons in a dysfunctional family as they try to scrape out a living on a Montana ranch. Drought and the Depression, women and war - all these become players in the drama. The author brought the time and place to vivid life for me; now I'm homesick for the West!
