Beat The Reaper

This first time novel by Josh Bazell has me eagerly awaiting his follow up. Beat the Reaper kept me thoroughly engaged in the characters from the opening page clear through to the end. The story is fast paced and jumps from past to present often but it was not at all difficult to keep up with the story. The flashbacks do an excellent job of explaining the protagonist’s current circumstances. Although he was a ruthless killer in his past I found myself rooting for Peter “Bearclaw” Brown to survive when his past comes back with a vengeance.

Animal Crackers

It is rare that I read a short story collection in which most of the stories are so good they can stand on their own. Even within the collections of some of my favorite authors there are usually two or three that I just connect with. Therefore, I was thoroughly pleased when I found myself enjoying every story within Animal Crackers by an author I had not yet heard about. I am very much looking forward to her future works.

Let the Right One In (Widescreen)

Poignant, beautiful, haunting, gory, and terrifying are not words often used together to describe the same story but this perfectly describes Let the Right On End. Lately our cultural landscape has been inundated with all things vampire with mixed results. The story of a shy young boy who is being bullied at school and doesn’t appear to have many friends and the new girl in the neighborhood that turns out to be a bloodthirsty vampire is by far a more complex & interesting duo than the many current romantic human/vampire couplings getting all of the attention. Favorite scene in the movie: What really does happen when a vampire enters you home uninvited?
