Diver Down

This is a great book about scuba diving accidents, and how to avoid them. For those not as familiar with a specific type of diving, or are unfamiliar with the terms used, there are subsections to explain the more technical/ specific elements included in the stories. Somewhat basic for those who are more familiar/ experienced with scuba diving and rescue training, but an interesting read none-the-less. Has some great reminders about how quickly diving accidents can happen, and how easily they can be avoided.

Hotel World
by

This book is a jumble of lyrical prose. Set through the experiences of five people surrounding one hotel, and one experience, this book sets a path through the minds of different people all set on explaining the world for themselves, if not for anyone else. Indistinctly related, the information given to the reader about these people is hazy and their backgrounds are messy and muddled. It is their thought process, feelings, immediate experiences that we as the reader have access to. Stream of consciousness writing explores the use of language and how it sounds and how it muddles together. Not an easy read, but a worthwhile one.

Demon Fish Travels Through the Hidden World of Sharks
by
Juliet Eilperin

Sharks are a fantastic indicator of how the rest of the ocean is faring. Sharks are in decline, in serious danger of disappearing forever; the oceans are in a similar state. Demon Fish traces the ecological impacts of the decline of sharks, and what their elimination means for our oceans and for us. Set fear aside and learn about these beautiful and graceful creatures! Eilperin traces these fish across the world, and pleads a great case for them.

A great book for kids and adults about humans effects on the oceans, and how we can change our impact for the better. Set in several different mediums, this book does a great job of reaching its readers in lots of different ways. Can we make a change? How? Find out in Kurlansky's impressive book!

Baba Yaga Laid an Egg

A compelling retelling of a myth through the lives of several women. Baba Yaga is, above all, a myth of women, daughters, wives, sisters; Baba Yaga, while not in the center stage as a powerful and famous woman, is characterized as an element of women, not to be pushed to the background and dismissed as a mythical entity with no grounding in the modern world. An interesting read, especially for those with a soft spot for mythologies.
