Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Food Wine the Italian Riviera & Genoa

I was familiar with David Downie because of his cookbook Cooking the Roman Way. As a frequent traveler to Italy, I recognized the authenticity of his recipes and it is one of my favorite cookbooks. When I saw this guide book and his guide to Rome I immediately bought both. While I have not yet been back to Liguria to try some of his recommendations, I have read through the book, selecting the markets and restaurants I will try in that region of Italy. I can attest that his guide to Rome was spot on and I feel fortunate to have found such a competent writer for culinary travel guides to Italy. I only hope he continues the series. David manages to find restaurants that would elude us had we not read the book. I cannot thank him enough for sending us to Hosteria Romana in Rome for the best Carbonara we have ever eaten.

Spaghetti Sauces
by
Biba Caggiano

I'm a big fan of Biba Caggiano's having collected all of her cookbooks and having eaten in her restaurant Biba's in Sacramento. Her books are wonderful resources for Bolognese cooking and this new book was a long time in coming. She has compiled many unusual recipes for pasta sauces, many of which combine vegetables into the recipes. For anyone looking to incorporate more vegetables into their diet, this book is a good choice. It was really good to see so many recipes that are not included in every other Italian cookbook.

Italian Sausage Bible

While the book has many recipes using Italian sausage, it has few recipes for actually making sausage. The very small size of the book was unappealing. I don't recall seeing it when checking on the number of pages.

Biba's Taste of Italy: Recipes from the Homes, Trattorie and Restaurants of Emilia-Romagna
by
Caggiano, Biba

, March 18, 2013
I started collecting cookbooks years ago and realized quickly that the books I was actually using were books with authentic Italian recipes. After my first Biba Caggiano book purchase, I decided to collect all of her books. The food of Emilia Romagna is reputed to be the best in all of Italy and Biba's recipes make me believe that. Because it is Northern Italian you will see more use of butter and cow's milk cheeses and less olive oil, tomatoes and pecorino cheese. This book is divided into courses with a broad range of recipes that are sure to please anyone who wants authentic Italian food. For anyone who has traveled to Italy, the recipes will help you relive your trip all over again.

Bugialli On Pasta

A must have book for anyone interested in authentic Italian recipes. One of the most complete books on classic pasta dishes I have found. Because there is no photo here, I'm not certain if this was the earlier or later edition. The later edition of this book adds another twenty or so recipes, but the earlier version will keep you so busy trying its many delicious recipes, it won't matter.

This series may seem old by today's standards, but these recipes are classic and after years of careful search, I have finally finished purchasing the entire series of books from antipasti to zuppe. This particular book has been my favorite and was my inspiration for collecting authentic Italian recipes.

Italy For The Gourmet Traveler 2nd Edition
by
Fred Plotkin
justafoodietraveler
, November 13, 2008
My original copy of Plotkin's book is ragged around the edges from use. If you're interested in Italian cuisine and do any travel to Italy, you could use this book as a travel guide just as I have. Fred Plotkin makes an excellent tour guide for culinary travel in Italy, and through the luscious descriptions of restaurants, food shops and markets, he has encouraged my itinerary to stretch well beyond the major cities. I've visited many of the places mentioned in the first edition of this book and look forward to purchasing the revised edition.
