Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Jack McDevitt is a master at alien encounters. When I picture what a first encounter should be like in my mind, Jack seems to be reading my mind. I like the fact that the Academy has rules that all explorers must follow. So, everytime there's a chance encounter with an alien lifeform he makes it seem like your right there in the story. It's exactly what I want when I pick up a book like this one. I know you'll enjoy reading Jack's books and you'll be starving for more.I suggest Omega next. His stories all have a way of bringing you into the book. I would tell you what it's about, but I want you to be shocked when you find out what happens. You won't be sorry when you purchase this book or any other book by Jack McDevitt. I promise.

Coyote Rising
by
Allen Steele

First: Why does my computer show cooments when I type comments? Interesting! Anyways, Allen Steele has an excellent series of stories about the over population of Earth and of course, the poor condition of said planet, with a Socialistic Government throw in the mix and Global warming of all things. Through a lottery, names are picked to travel 51 light years away to 47 Ursae Majoris and a planet called Coyote. But, before they leave the Ship is overtaken by, wouldn't you know it, those damn Capitalists. ("Coyote", the first book). So, in "Coyote Rising" those damn capitalists have settled in a place called Midland and the next several ships sent have Union soldiers with lots of bad people who want to kill the first settlers. And let the Revolution begin! I very enjoyable, fast paced, well written book and I think you'll want to read the third installment called, "Coyote Frontier". So, grab your socks and grab your c----, wait a minute I can't say that can I? Sorry! Please go buy this book you will enjoy it, especially if your one of those damn Capitalists.

Kethani

Eric Brown

Unlike previous cooments, I was left satisfied by this book and enjoyed it very much. Maybe, the only question was who were killing the Ke'thani. Other than that, there were no questions unanswered. Buy this book and enjoy it. It's just a, "what if" story and good one at that. When your done, make sure you purchase "Helix" by Eric Brown, also. It's one of the best space opera's I've read since "The Sirens of Titan" by Kurt Vonnequt. Enjoy!
