Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

I had read a few vampire books and I had read other books by Seth Grahame Smith and I didn't have very high expectations for this book, but it ended up being my favorite read of 2011. I enjoyed how the book is fiction ... or is it? The writing feels so real, it is easy to fall into the story and believe that our 16th president truly was a vampire hunter. The book is very well written and the pacing is great.

I rediscovered this book as I was moving in April. I had read it many years ago but had forgotten the wonder of the book until I decided to read it again. I love how the story weaves back and forth and I love all of the questions that remain at the end. I shared this book with anyone who would listen to me this year.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life

This book really changed the way I think about food production. I was already vegan when I read this, but it really made me think about the food that I do choose to put into my body. I think the "locavore" movement is great, even if it isn't realistic for everyone to produce enough food for themselves. The book inspired me to attempt a garden again (which failed), but I still hope to one day grow at least something that I can eat. There were a lot of great ideas in the book, as well as some great recipes. I enjoyed reading about the family's successes and blunders.
