Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Ulysses S. Grant: Triumph Over Adversity, 1822-1865
by
Brooks Simpson
Richard Welty
, November 30, 2014
An excellent biography of Grant returns to print after too long. This is the first volume of two, covering Grant from his birth through the end of the Civil War. The second volume is apparently in the process of being published, but I don't know of any projected publication date. Simpson does an excellent job sorting out fact and fiction about Grant, directly addressing the question of Grant's drinking, and covering the Overland Campaign very clearly.

Civil War Series||||The Battle of First Deep Bottom
by
Jimmy Price
Richard Welty
, November 30, 2014
First Deep Bottom is a battle that is generally overlooked, or treated as a sideshow in accounts of the Battle of the Crater. but it has it's own unique story and Price presents it nicely in this brief (129 page) account. well worth reading if you want to develop a better sense of the Siege of Petersburg.

David Brion Davis

Outstanding history of slavery in the western hemisphere, thoroughly researched and documented. it includes discussion of how African slavery in the Americas differed from that which had come before, and also the differences between slavery in the United States and slavery in the rest of the Americas.

Republic in Crisis 1848 1861
by
John Ashworth
Richard Welty
, October 26, 2014
This is a very fine examination of the 12 years immediately preceding the outbreak of the American Civil War. Ashworth does an excellent job of covering the various political trends of the time, including the disintegration of the Whig party, the rise of the Republican party, and the forces which caused the Democratic party to splinter in 1860. Also covered is the brief success of the Know Nothing movement.

Gettysburg
by
Stephen W Sears
Richard Welty
, April 23, 2008
I have held the work of Stephen Sears in high regard ever since I first read Landscape Turned Red many years ago. Gettysburg continues his fine work with the Civl War campaigns in the east. I picked it up in conjunction with my first visit to the battlefield park, and it helped immmensely in understanding what went on there, and why these two armies met in this place to begin with. Particularly nice is the treatment of the high commands of the two armies. Lee's developing problems with the loss of capable generals is contrasted with Meade's mostly successful efforts to manage the challenging command relationships he inherited in the Army of the Potomac when he took command only a week before the battle. Sears in particular has a credible suggestion for the reasons behind Lee's insistence on the disasterous plan of attack for July 3rd, which lead to the infamous Pickett's Charge. This book is highly recommended if you wish to understand this crucial battle.

PostgreSQL Essential Reference
by
Barry Stinson

, December 22, 2006
This book was excellent when it first appeared. I still use it, but it is beginning to show its age as PostgreSQL has been evolving rapidly. The book is structured as a reference document, and is one of the better sources of information on the PL/pgSQL language.
