Powell's Staff:
Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I LOVE my Kobo! I have a Kindle as well, but prefer to support Powell's, and so decided to buy this after buying books at Amazon recommended by Powell's staff. The guilt was overwhelming... The backlight on this is perfect, the size makes it easy for my bus commute, and NOW I can get my recommendations from Powell's Daily Dose, and buy books w/o guilt! Unlike another reviewer, I've found the customer service folks to be quite helpful, and responsive. My only complaint is that I can't get help from the folks at Powell's, but have to call.

Since every book on my wishlist comes from Powell's Daily Dose, I decided that it's time that I paid back the favor. Perla is easily one of the most moving books I have ever encountered. The story of a girl growing up in Argentina during and after the "Dirty War", De Robertis' prose will astound you and pull you, inescapably, into this story. For those of us who know of this horrific time from afar, Perla creates an intimate, albeit disturbing, understanding of that period in Argentina's history. It is a compelling read of a very difficult time.
