Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Wow. The power and depth of Russell's writing is astonishing. She uses religious epiphanies, comedy, death, murder, prostitution, and psychological destruction, all to serve a story of first contact that is mystery, drama, love story, thriller and hard sf all in one intriguing package. An exploration of man's challenges to reconcile religious faith and the struggle to understand God's will against the real world of unintended harm, survival by any means, and miscommunication (or perhaps misinterpretation) gone very wrong. Don't let the religion or science fiction scare you away. Pick it up and read it. Mary Doria Russell shouts, "Science fiction includes great literature!" You should, too.

An amazing compilation of wisdom from most of the world's religions and spiritual practices. From biblical to modern times, Kuntz and Ketcham gracefully explore the spiritual landscape of human brokenness with ease and insight. A full meal of spiritual storytelling that can be returned to often for inspiration and growth.

Hunters Run

This tightly woven, raw, and compelling science fiction tale tracks one man's desperate struggle to survive in his difficult world. As the story unfolds, he becomes the center of a mystery that begins in the Eden-like wilds of his adopted home planet and engulfs far more than his self-absorbed plans. An excellent story from the minds of Gardner Dozois (world renown sf editor), George R. R. Martin, and Abraham, Daniel.
