Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type
by
Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin
maroan
, November 24, 2008
Farmer Brown discovers that his cows know how to type when he receives a message from them about their need for electric blankets. When he refuses to give them blankets the cows in turn refuse to give Farmer Brown any milk for the day. As the story moves on the cows continue to ask for items for not only themselves but also their friends, the hens. Overall this is a great book for young readers because it is humorous and will make children laugh out loud. The illustrations in the boom are also worth looking at because they focus on many different facial expressions to show what the characters are thinking. Children will also learn the life lesson that although it may seem very difficult to get things you want, if you never give up, there is always the opportunity to get what you are hoping for.

Ruby Lu Empress Of Everything
by
Lenore Look, Anne Wilsdorf

Ruby Lu’s Empress of Everything is a chapter book where the main character Ruby Lu finally has the opportunity to become a “Smile Buddy” when her cousin Flying Duck moved from China. Ruby is given the opportunity to show her cousin around the school, and to meet new people. Although Ruby was very excited to be the “Smile Buddy” she made a few mistakes along the way. Both Ruby Lu and Flying Duck were assigned to attend summer school because of their low performance over the school year. Although summer school was not Ruby’s idea of a fun summer, she still managed to enjoy the summer by learning to blow bubbles at swim lessons, use some Chinese sign language, and become friends with Emma. Overall this is a great book for a lower elementary student (1st-3rd grade). It shows the importance of accepting people from different cultures. This is an easy to read book with some pictures that although they are black and white seem to help the reader visualize the story better. Ruby Lu Empress of Everything is a book that many children will have the opportunity to share some commonalities because her experiences are similar to that of an elementary student. She not only had the opportunity to help a fellow student during the year, she had friendship issues, and she had a fear of the water. Overall this is a great read for elementary students. Hope you enjoy!!!!!
