Good Brown Earth

This is a great book to illustrate many things. Young Joe and Gram have a great relationship and spend a lot of time together. They take care of the vegetable patch which is also a learning experience for young Joe. This story goes from fall to fall and explains all that the good brown earth does throughout the seasons. The book shows a good family relationship, seasons and growing and learning about the earth. There are many tasks that are to be completed at each season and it shows Gram and Joe taking place in each of these. The book shows patience and waiting as they wait for nature to run its course in the vegetable patch. This book could be a useful tool for many situations. A good read for young children, especially when teaching them about the seasons.

Homework Machine 01
by

Don't we all wish we could get out of homework sometimes? All ages, young children, high school students and even college students have a dislike for homework. Well a group of four might have just solved that problem. The group is very diverse. It is made up of a geek, class clown, slacker and teacher's pet. A machine is developed to help them with their homework. Can they keep the secret between just them? The Homework Machine is a book that develops a story through the voices of fifth graders and people around them. It is interesting on how the author tells the story from fifth graders perspectives. They worry about many unrealistic things such as being thrown in jail. It is a good, quick read. The foursome learns a lot about each other and become friends. At first they are friends because of their secret, but eventually they become friends by choice. It is a good book that illustrates honesty, friendship, and of course doing your homework! The students learn a lot about each other and not to judge a book by it's cover. The Homework Machine is a humorous and good read for many ages.

Ruby Lu Empress Of Everything
by

Ruby Lu is an Asian-American second grader whose cousin Flying Duck emigrates from China to come to live with her. At first Ruby Lu is ecstatic that about the situation. She loves the attention, being a Smile Buddy and all the new things she learns from Flying Duck. Eventually all the change is too much for Ruby Lu. Her family is eating different foods and speaking minimal English. Ruby Lu’s distinctive attitude on life from one extreme and humorous event to the next is illustrated throughout the book. In addition the book shows many episodes of how literal young children take things such as when the 911 operator asks Ruby-Lu , “Where’s your emergency?” and Ruby Lu answers, “In the dining room.” Throughout the book there are situations that many young children ages 6-10 can relate to and would enjoy reading about. For example, Ruby Lu and Flying Duck are sent home with a note for their parents. Since notes from the teachers are usually considered bad; she hides both notes. In the end the note actually turns out to be positive. Despite the differences that Flying Duck faces from being deaf and knowing minimal English, she fits right in. Everyone likes Flying Duck and embraces her differences. This book is a good one that shows children about diversity and friendship. Ruby Lu by Lenore Look is a fun and enjoyable book but is also educational.
