I read 140 books in 2012 and this one was the best, hands down!

All Summer Long

Spoiler Alert: There's a happy ending! Okay, you knew that. It's a romance, a genre known for HEAs (Happily Ever Afters). And it's set in the fictional (darn it!) town of Fool's Gold, California - the Land of Happy Endings. So, here's a reader tip that could be useful - the heroine is a survivor of sexual assault. If that's a possible trigger for you, you might not want to read this book. I don't want you to have to deal with added hurts. But it wasn't triggery for me and it gave me hope. The story is about Charlie (don't call her Chantal) and her journey to heal from that long-ago trauma. Is her method realistic, recommended? Not really, but the author handles it in a forthright way, explaining everything so it makes sense. It's a romance. Suspend your disbelief just a little. You'll fall in love with the characters, their stories, and the town they live in. I know I did!

Only His

Susan Mallery has said that when she pitched Only His to her publisher, the publisher was initially hesitant about the key humorous piece - a two-word phrase. Ever since reading that, I was dying of curiosity about that phrase. Was it the opening sentence? "Never agree to a job interview in which the interviewer has seen you naked." Nope - too many words. The scene on page 123 and our heroine's reaction to it? Maybe. I'm hooked - gotta keep reading! Could it be the "feral cows" on page 137 - no...the publisher wouldn't hesitate over that, would she? The scene on page 230 and our heroine's reaction to it? Quite possibly! Can't go to sleep now, this book is great! OMG! Page 241 - this MUST be it! And a hundred pages left to find out how this plays out! WHEE!!! As always, Susan Mallery delivers great characters that I truly care about. She also introduces new people that I hope will be featured in her future Fool's Gold books. Only His was filled with humor, inspiring smiles and laughter. A great way to end this trilogy...with giggles and hope for more!

Only Yours

Believable characters are important, especially so in romances. You already know the general plot and how it will turn out, right? I once refused to finish reading a book because it the characters were entirely unbelievable (15th century Scottish warrior telling the heroine to take a hot bath and relax didn't ring true). Susan Mallery's "Only Yours" is at the opposite end of that spectrum. Her characters are fully realized and completely believable. Montana Hendrix trains therapy dogs. She gives her whole heart her career, in part because she struggled for so long to find her passion. Simon Bradley is a surgeon specializing in traumatically injured children. Their first meeting is a disaster, but soon the sparks are flying. There's just one catch in their Happily Ever After - Simon isn't staying in Fool's Gold. How Montana deals with this is one of the things that made her so believable to me. She knows that what she and Simon share is special, even if it isn't lasting. She doesn't try to change Simon but loves him as he is. Her love heals, just as much Simon's surgical skills...and in much the same way as the affection the therapy dogs she trains. As always, I adore the secondary characters and catching up on people introduced earlier in the Fool's Gold series. I'd love to live in that town! But what I love most about this book is Montana and Simon. They are vibrant, realistic, and completely believable.

Only Mine

Fool's Gold is a small town with a unique problem - there's a man shortage. Now you might think they'd be overjoyed to have a reality show come to town and publicize this, but think about it. Would you want your home turned into a ratings ploy? Dakota Hendrix is the town's representative on the production crew, trying to manage the experience in a way that benefits the town. That's where she meets Finn Andersson. Like her, he's not thrilled with the reality show - his brothers have signed up despite his wishes. He wants them back in college and back on the life track he's picked for them. This is a romance, a genre I love. The overall story arc is predictable - girl meets boy, conflict arises, conflict is overcome, they live happily ever after. But Susan Mallery is adept both with the characters and with the conflicts that arise. She adds some twists that surprised me (happily so). And Fool's Gold is a charming setting, full of women who care about each other...and the men who love them. It's perfect summer reading! I was drawn in from page 1 (I lucked into an advance copy), laughed several times along the way, and stayed up later than I should have because I just had to find out what happened next! I heartily recommend Only Mine. After you indulge yourself, you'll want the next books in the series. Only Yours will be out in late August and Only His hits the shelves at the end of September. While you wait, go back and read the first three books Chasing Perfect, Almost Perfect, and Finding Perfect. You won't regret it!
