Trouble

This story is like an electric getaway, and you get swept away in it. It's about needing to escape your daily life and getting just that, amid a wash of booze and cigarettes and art and foreign men. And like so much, no matter where you go, there you are. And, in this case, it's a story told masterfully. She captures mood and place effectively and tragically.

A Gate at the Stairs
by

This is a superb book tells so much and is so wise, all from the vantage point of a young woman in college. Part coming of age, sexual awakening, witty Midwestern slice of life, racial identity, rural vs mildly urban, this book takes on so much and does it beautifully. Tassie Keltjin, the narrator, is a voice unlike others that I've read and she does with wonderful insights and solid reactions to situations. Her wry, clever wit carries her through it all and into my heart. Lorrie Moore may be best known for her short stories, but she sure can write a terrific novel.

This one's a hoot. Mistaken identities and taking advantage of it, cultural differences, upper class bad behavior, high-handedness and more. It's all fair game and it's all great entertainment under Michael Frayn's expert direction. He' a savvy satirist and an astute observer, as well as an exceptional writer.

Waiting for Sunrise
by
William Boyd

William Boyd continues to enchant. A great storyteller, he sets this in Vienna and Great Britain of WWII, and is a visual, engaging and dangerous journey. You understand nuances of being in the moment as its relates to war, psychotherapy, espionage, lust, wanting, class differences, and much, much more. Boyd builds wonderful characters that take you in and are woven beautifully into his stories.

Rough Music

I loved this book, tracking the two stories side by side and the surprises as i connected the dots. at times, i felt foolish for missing so much connectivity, and then at other times love the differences and being absorbed separately. Romantic, engaging, very well-written, with familial strife, and all of the angst that can accompany that, via a variety of trials and tribulations, I thoroughly enjoyed this story.

Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned

Wells Tower

Wells Towers characters live in a world that I am only somewhat familiar with, but I'd welcome being there, if only for a short time. The stories are wild, wonderful and truly original.
