Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Waiting For The Rain

I don't entirely agree with the previous review. Although this book glossed over some of the more violent aspects of the apartheid, lets face it; this is a young adult novel it can't be too violent. This book demonstrates the boys evolving friendship and their pushing against racial boundaries. Instead of situating the story on the violence, the author also shows us the softer side of the conflict. This is an interesting read and I would recommend it to those interested in not only a good story, but one with heart. Oh, and yes the ending seems to be somewhat unresolved but makes sense.

Demonata 01 Lord Loss
by
Darren Shan

Grubs Grady is a great realistic character. In Darren Shan's books the characters seem real and have real emotions. The fight scenes against Demons and maybe a werewolf? Are done really well; Daren Shan seems to have a penchant for graphic, discriptive writing and is on my top most buy list. This first book in a long seris is very good and only a beggining to even better writing; before you're half-way through this book you WON'T be able to put it down!!

Twilight Directors Notebook The Story of How We Made the Movie Based on the Novel by Stephenie Meyer
by

This book is great if you are in to electronics and special effects or if you are just an ordinary person. Itexplains the requirements that the director was looking for in his actors. It also shows how they layered special effects over actual images. It shows how the director and screen specialist did all sorts of designs. In all, a book that anyone over the age of 11 or 12 will love.

Torn Away
by
James Heneghan

Torn Away is a good book that explores a young boys outlook on life when they have been exposed to a very negative enviorment. Declan Doyle has a lot of problems that need to be resolved at the beginning of the novel but is a very realistic character you'll come to love.He teaches many lessons in the book, including what can happen if you try to solve ever problem with violence. Although this is a good book I would not recomend it for people under 12 years of age. Because of very discriptive scenes and mature language.
