Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Of Kings & Things Strange Tales & Decadent Poems by Count Eric Stanislaus Stenbock
by
Eric Stanislaus Stenbock, David Tibet

When I first heard about Count Stenbock, I was sure he was a hoax. His backstory is just too good, and his works too elusive. Though lauded by everyone from Yeats to famed occult historian Francis King, his work has been impossible to find until now. Thanks to Current93's David Tibet, we now have a collection of 15 lasciviously dark stories, and over 80 Victorian-era goth poems from one of history's most decadent Decadents. Also included are painstakingly gathered anecdotes and police statements about our dear Count. Welcome to your latest obsession.

Care for Our World Play Set
by
Robbins, Karen

This is a beautiful gift! It comes with a wonderfully illustrated picture book with a light-handed message of wonder and respect for animals. Also included is a set of lovely, detailed die-cut figures that are sturdy, and perfect for little hands. It all fits in the hardy gift box, which doubles as a backdrop for the play set. A great gift if you are travelling with or to little ones for the holidays.

So Good For Little Bunnies

This book is beautiful, funny, silly and cool. In addition to the eccentric storyline, it displays a level of design that is rare in a picture book. In a new generation of hip kid's books, this book shines!

The Coyote Kings of the Space-Age Bachelor Pad
by
Minister Faust

What do you get when you cross sci-fi slackers, make magazine, dungeons and dragons, gangster noir, egyptology, true love, a fela kuti soundtrack, and a culturally diverse urban neighborhood in canada? I know what you're thinking: an overly ambitious mess. But it isn't. It's an amazing epic poem of a novel which I have been religiously recommending since I found it. Minister Faust is woefully underpublished.
