Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

We Should All Be Feminists
by
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
Rita R
, September 19, 2015
Chimamanda Adichie is an amazing voice of grace and beauty. Beyoncé "sampled" some of this in her hit "Flawless." It is a quick and wonderful read.

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
by
Maya Angelou
Rita R
, May 29, 2014
Now that Maya Angelou will never write another word, I turn back to this classic to be reminded, once again, of her beautiful --yet difficult -- voice, and the life she spun from some difficult and chaotic times. This should be required reading...

David & Goliath Underdogs Misfits & The Art of Battling Giants
by
Malcolm Gladwell
Rita R
, October 08, 2013
In classic Malcolm Gladwell style, David & Goliath helps you see beyond and behind the obvious. Not only does he tell stories about how the supposedly weak overcome the obviously strong, he turns 'conventional wisdom' on its head to show how California's "three strikes" law increases crime, how going to an Ivy League school can sometimes create failure, and how playing by the rules can look like breaking them. Wonderful book!

How Children Succeed
by
Paul Tough
Rita R
, January 01, 2013
If you are a parent or involved in any aspect of our educational system, you need to read this book. Paul Tough reads all the boring research about how kids learn and how our education process helps and hinders that and puts it into readable, accessible language.

Erin Gruwell took Ghandi's challenge: she became the change she hoped to see in the world. And the 150+ students who would not have ever received an education were changed...the story of the Freedom Writers is inspiring and as important as ever....

Unbroken A World War II Story of Survival Resilience & Redemption
by
Laura Hillenbrand

, January 04, 2012
This amazing book about the life of Louis Zamperini kept me up late at night and caused me to play hookey from work (don't tell my boss!) The writing is fabulous and the details just grab you -- I don't usually like "war memoirs" but this was so much more than I ever imagined. It truly was the best book I read in 2011.

Geoffrey Canada has created solutions for educating children in Harlem that can and should be replicated all over the country. "Whatever it Takes" is a compelling narrative that will draw you in and make you want to find out what he has done and how he has done it.
