Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Les Forceurs de Blocus

Each short is so perfectly constructed, and dovetails neatly into the next. The result is a cathartic story arc I wished would never end. Which it sort of didn't. Superman Stories II was a difficult exercise in blending superhero lore with religious and existential puzzles. But by the end of both volumes, a groundwork and contagious style were solidly in place. Mark's spare, efficient prose rockets to the point as all good humor writing should. And the cover is deco/depression-propaganda perfection to boot. Best mini-novella ever.

Help A Bear Is Eating Me

Based on Mr. Hansen's amazing book trailer, viewable here: http://vimeo.com/2150064, I have a greater sense of pathos and grasp the tone of the comi-tragedy which are bear-human confrontations in the wild. A fine read. Thirteen chapters muttered by an awful man being slowly devoured feetfirst by a fairly nice bear. Brilliant!
