This is a beautiful book about being human, and it took me completely by surprise. Normally part of the draw of a novel is being able to identify with or at least sympathize with a main character. I didn't really like the main characters, but somehow author Huston made me care deeply about their stories anyway. For a book with such stark characterizations, it packs a big emotional punch, and has haunted me since I first picked it up. It's the story of three wounded people carrying on after WWII, and the intersection of their lives and fates with each other and with the brutal past they're all trying to forget. Read this book! It will change you.

This book was written in the 1930s, so the writing style takes a bit of getting used to, but it's well worth the effort. What a story! It's got passion, history, betrayal, politics...Set in Baku, Azerbaijan at the onset of WWI, at first glance it appears to be a love story between a Muslim boy and a Christian girl. But it goes far beyond that to examine issues that are still with us today: the conflict between Christianity and Islam, between the branches of Islam, between tradition and modernity, and the conflict within the main character, who must choose between living as a man of the East or a man of the West. Though historic, this novel helped me understand the issues that have changed our world in the last decade. And it's a great read! Its mysterious origins only add to its appeal. Highly recommend.
