Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Women Dont Ask The High Cost of Avoiding Negotiation & Positive Strategies for Change
by
Linda Babcock
lesnoces
, June 16, 2012
A coworker recommended this book when I mentioned my discomfort at negotiating. I was amazed at how much I learned. Many women, the authors argue, believe that managers will pay them what they are worth or promote them as they deserve, when in fact the key to better money and opportunities is to go after them. The book also discusses the importance of advocating for yourself in personal relationships. This is a fantastic book for men as well as women at any stage of their career, but particularly for recent graduates.

Apocalypse Cakes Recipes for the End
by
Shannon O'Malley

, August 22, 2011
In addition to its lefty humor, Apocalypse Cakes contains real, delicious recipes. I just tried out the Chernobyl White Russian Cupcakes and my coworkers unanimously loved them. Perfect for irreverent bakers who'd rather laugh at our problems than weep.

Streb How to Become an Extreme Action Hero
by
Elizabeth Streb
lesnoces

A very readable memoir about Streb's life's work pushing the boundary of what the human body can do. I recommend it even if you aren't usually interested in books about dance/movement.

Say Her Name
by
Francisco Goldman

In 2007, Goldman lost his wife of two years in a freak accident. His amazing, poignant memoir is both an account of surviving grief and a love letter to the woman who changed his life.

Class Action: The Landmark Case that Changed Sexual Harassment Law
by
Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler
lesnoces
, December 03, 2010
Class Action details a pivotal case in sexual harassment law and tells the stories of the women involved. As someone interested in the law in general (as a lay person) and sex/gender issues in particular, I found this book to be immensely readable as well as infuriating. I highly recommend it to anyone who cares about discrimination in any form. If you don't, consider reading it anyway--maybe it will change your mind!

Colettes Birthday Cakes

These cakes are beyond stunning. Although I'm an avid baker, I don't have the skill or patience to make creations so painstaking, but I love looking through this book for fun.

A beautifully illustrated story that educates children not only about Nepalese culture, but also about seeing the best in others.

I See You Everywhere
by

This book is awful. I can't believe the author wrote something that won the National Book Award. I read about 2/3 of it before I decided to stop punishing myself.
