All Natural A Skeptics Quest for Health & Happiness in an Age of Ecological Anxiety
by
Nathanael Johnson

3.5 stars, rounded up. This books is made up of previously written essays that were put together and elaborated on to form a book. Each chapter represents a new idea and is connected with the underlying theme of technological vs all-natural. Don't read this book looking for answers, be prepared to think for yourself. Johnson does a good job of providing information from both sides of the argument without the usual condescension or one sided-ness you typically find with this type of book. Although, I am like him in that I lean toward all natural but like it backed up with science, so someone who is all technologically thinking might not view it this way. It's well researched and informational.

Bold Spirit Helga Estbys Forgotten Walk Across Victorian America
by

Read this after reading “The Daughter's Walk“ and wanting to know more. This is a well researched look with a list of sources and citing. It gave a vivid picture of what might have happened on Helga's journey and a wonderful history of the time. There is so much we'll never know about their trip. While I find myself angry at the family for destroying most all evidence of the walk, I found the insight on silenced stories interesting.

Choose Your Own Adventure 29 Smoke Jumpers

As a former wildland firefighter and a wife of a hotshot, I thought this would be a fun read. I use to read CYOA books when I was younger and always enjoyed them, they're like several books in one. This one was very abrupt, the stories ended quickly, in a paragraph and didn't give you much of a conclusion on what happened. On a few of the adventures, I'm still not sure exactly what happened. Some of the wildland fire information was more accurate than many books dealing with the subject in a fictional setting. Although the training and gear they had (or lack of) isn't realistic. I was disappointed so few of the adventures actually dealt with fighting fire. Others, without knowledge of the occupation may enjoy the book more.

I love the characters, I love the way the story is told. At first I thought the sections where the dead kid, the pagoda and Vera's dad talk wouldn't work, but they did and added to the awesome writing style in the book. The characters are so real, this could happen. The emotions are palpable. This is a book that will stick with me quite awhile. This is me using love in a sentences - over and over again.

A Fighting Chance
by
Elizabeth Warren

This definitely has a liberal slant to it, since I'm liberal that didn't bother me but I did notice it. I really liked the look into Warren's life, starting from childhood until she became a Senator. I was a fan of hers before and am now even more so. I laughed out loud and I cried some too. I loved that she narrated this book, she did an outstanding job and hearing it in her voice made it a great listening experience - she's very expressive. It also was a good "outsider" look at bankruptcy and the financial crisis we're still suffering from. Fight on.

Astronaut Wives Club A True Story
by

This is an intimate look at what life was like as an astronaut wife. While it doesn't go in depth on each individual wife, issues and experiences for many (too many really - it was hard to keep them straight) of the wives are discussed. They feel proud to have been apart of the space program but I feel like they had a traumatic experience - expected to be perfect, while most of their husbands cheated on them and they were pushed to the backseat of life sounds heartbreaking. It was a very interesting view of the space program, from the women who supported the men - like many professions, the women were essential to making their husbands astronauts. This was fascinating to me and I recommend it from a women's history perspective as well as a look at the space program.

What More Could You Wish for
by

This is a great story about Libby, who turns 50 during the story. It's a bridge between romance and a woman rediscovering herself. Libby is in a relationship with Michael, who shows signs of security for her future. At this first sign of unease, she searched out classmates from an ad online, and there before her is her high school love, Patrick. The rest of the story follows Libby as she deals with a life changing family tragedy, her feelings for two men, her own feelings and taking back her life that she is letting get away from her. This story is much more than the blurb on the back. Rec'd an ARC for free through Goodreads.com First Reads program.
