Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Fade
by
Cormier, Robert
Bill Lapadat
, December 11, 2014
As a middle school English teacher, I can very highly recommend this book for a mature young adult. The story's premise is that a boy discovers he has the power to "fade," that is, to become invisible for a period of time. He can see and hear what others are doing around him and they don't know he is there. There were places that were creased in the binding of a copy that I kept in my classroom library, and I was not surprised at which scenes these two or three creases naturally opened up to...there is some sexual content as the boy learns that voyeurism can reveal things to you that you wish you had a chance to "un-see." But that is only one of several themes in the book. Cormier handles these--and all the scenes in the book--deftly, like a master craftsman should. And Cormier is indeed a master of the genre of young adult fiction. Highly recommended for a mature teen reader.

Rainbow in the Night The Tumultuous Birth of South Africa
by
Dominique Lapierre
Bill Lapadat
, March 20, 2013
You can certainly find longer books on the history of South Africa. But you will not find one as brilliantly written and entertaining as "Rainbow in the Night". Most non-fiction books are written by historians who happen to be writers. Lapierre (author of the highly acclaimed "City of Joy") is the reverse--an author who happens to be an outstanding historian. He tells the story of South Africa as an author would--with stories. These stories capture the events that shaped "South African-ness." Minor and major, representative or pivotal, Lapierre's stories paint the picture of a place and the people who made it. The place of South Africa.

Everyday Life In Early America
by
David Freeman Hawke
Bill Lapadat
, February 11, 2008
With great skill and style, Hawke has created a book that serves a number of readers well. Obviously, students, history majors, teachers and professors will be able to glean a huge amount of information from ELEA. But for a much larger audience--those simply interested in colonial America or simply want a quiet, soothing read that's perfect for a night by the fireplace with a cup of tea and a cat on your lap. Entertaining as well as informative, Hawke's style makes this very useful book an extremely enjoyable read. In a world where TV's the size of tennis courts bleat out flash, crash and junior high bathroom sexual humor, this book is respite. ELEA by Hawke is food for the brain. Whether you're a student stuffing himself for an exam or just a thoughtful, discriminating fan of nonfiction looking for a wee snack, this book is terrific. Enjoy,
