Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Nutshell Library 4 Volumes

One of the best things Sendak wrote besides "Where the Wild Things Are". I had these as a child and they are now a favorite with my son. Plus all children love a small special book, let alone four! One is about the alphabet, one a counting book, one about seasons, and one about Pierre who would only say "I don't care". If you are interested in these, an excellent accompaniment would be the Really Rosie CD which includes the words of these books set to music by Carole King. A real treasure.

The story of a daydreaming girl, this is another favorite of Dodd's books in our house. The imaginings are cute, although the rhymes don't always work for the American accented reading of it (giraffe and scarf?). It doesn't stop my son from requesting it again and again.

Slinky Malinki Open The Door Open The

My two year old son really enjoys this one. Part of the Slinky Malinki series, it is my favorite of them so far. The cat and parrot are constantly creating havoc as the roam through the house. The pictures are fun and detailed enough to guess what room is next and explore the messes made by these two pets. And like the ending, giving the dogs either a chance to create more mess or get blamed. Fun book by a New Zealand author.

This book was always a favorite of mine as a child and I have not found an Easter book I like better since. The illustrations are lovely and the story of the family and their travels is sweet. I love that the little rabbit becomes an artist, taking part in his parents love of art in his unique way.
