This beautifully written novel is about the thawing of a frozen heart. Self-imposed exile, living on a tiny island off the coast of Sweden, Fredrik Welin suddenly finds himself on the threshold of renewal. When an unexpected visitor alters his life completely, thus begins an eccentric, elegiac journey. This story is well written and very well translated.

The exploration of good and evil in this post apocalyptic story is told in a sparse, often disjunctive, language. I admit, took me a bit to get into cadence. Hig, our narrator, is a soaring spirit of hope, that triumphs over heartbreak, trauma, and insurmountable struggles.

A beautiful, well written story spanning over 100 years or more, following the quirky townspeople of Paradise Deep, Newfoundland. It is filled with weird little vignettes imbued with a magical spark and a folkloric vibrancy that sucks the reader into its undertow. I could not put it down. A must read for any of you that love, or even like, seafaring novels.
