Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Formation Of Christendom
by
Judith Herrin

Herrin creates an extremely complex and informative work on the evolution of Christianity throughout the Dark Ages. The subject is a fascinating one, however Herrin's prose is somewhat difficult for non-academics to follow. While I highly recommend this book for anyone seriously studying the subject, it might be to much for non-specialists to handle.

Women in Purple: Rulers of Medieval Byzantium
by
Judith Herrin

Judith Herrin gives very thorough look at three Imperial Byzantine Women and how they influenced the men around them on matters of iconoclasty and religious orthodoxy. While the book is extremely informative, the somewhat dry writing style might make this a difficult read for some people. However, if you can get past it, this book is a wonderful fountain of knowledge on the subject.

Gods War Bel Dame Apocrypha 1

"God's War" immediately takes you to a very different world filled with the same problems as ours presented on a slant. Not only is this book an excellent and exciting read that I couldn't put down, it made me look at the world, both real and fictional, in new ways. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Enchantment Emporium
by
Tanya Huff

Set in a fantastical version of our own world, Huff makes you believe that magic could be hiding just around the corner on in the junk shop down the way. The story focus on Alysha Gale when she receives a letter from her Gran leaving her her junk shop in the city and the responsibility to take care of her very interesting clientele. From the very first page Huff grabs your interest and doesn't let go. The interactions between the family members are incredibly real feeling and you feel for Alysha from the first moment. Overall a wonderfully engaging book from an amazing author.
